Head to the medieval Alfama in Lisbon for a boutique stay next door to the famous Sao Jorge castle. Built on the ancient kitchens of the Royal Palace, Solar Do Castelo now has a medieval contemporary style. Think thick castle stone heavenly rich ochre, turquoise walls and plenty of charm.
Hidden away on a cobbled back street of the ancient Alfama area in Lisbon, this a Solar do Castelo is a romantic gem and the only hotel within the castle walls.
Alfama still retains a Moorish flavour from when Portugal was part of the Arabic empire. But it is also an area of contrasts, pretty tiled houses sit next to Catholic cathedrals and the red roofs and winding streets all head down to the sea.
This 18th-century building within the castle has 20 individually decorated bedrooms some of which face medieval Alfama and others the interior of the Sao Jorge castle. The contemporary Medieval design of the furniture was specifically made for the hotel.
While there is no official bar or restaurant there is an honesty bar, where you can take your drinks out to the terrace for a spot of sun.
Rich wooden furniture beautifully offsets the ancient flagstone floors and thick castle walls.
Watch the sunset over the pastel coloured Alfama from this pretty Moroccan siren. It’s a really hidden sunspot.
